Baserunning Drill: Breakdown Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Teaches players to run hard through first base, then break down to check for overthrows. Essential skill for smart baserunning.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Set up home plate and first base in their normal positions. Place a cone about 15-20 feet past first base in foul territory.
  2. Players line up at home plate and simulate hitting the ball.
  3. Each player runs hard through first base, touching the front edge of the bag while accelerating through it. Never slow down before the base.
  4. After crossing first base, continue running hard until reaching the cone.
  5. At the cone, break down into an athletic stance - knees bent, weight balanced, ready to react.
  6. Look back toward the infield over the right shoulder to check for an overthrow. If the throw is good, return to first. If there is an overthrow, take off for second.
