Baserunning Drill: Breakdown Baserunning Drill (Baseball & Softball)
A baserunning drill that teaches players how to run hard through first base and then break down properly to avoid being tagged on an overthrow.
Instructions
Set up home plate and first base in their normal positions. Place an orange cone about 15-20 feet past first base. Players line up at home plate and simulate hitting the ball. Run hard through first base, making sure to touch the front edge of the bag while accelerating through it. After crossing first base, continue running hard until reaching the cone. At the cone, break down into an athletic stance with knees bent and weight balanced. Look back toward the infield to see if there is an overthrow. If safe, return to first base. If there is an overthrow, advance to second base.
Coaching Points
- Teach players to always run through first base, never slowing down before the bag
- Emphasize touching the front of the base to minimize distance
- The breakdown should be quick and balanced, ready to react either direction
- Practice looking over the correct shoulder to see the play developing
