Fielding Drill: Backhand Pick & Stick Fungo (Baseball)
Catching drill for blocking balls in the dirt with emphasis on backhand technique on balls to either side of the catcher.
Instructions
Coach throws balls in dirt to catcher's left and right sides Catcher reads the ball and moves laterally to get in front Uses backhand technique to redirect ball down Keeps chest over the ball, chin tucked Recovers ball quickly and gets to throwing position Alternate sides: left, right, left, right Each catcher gets 10-15 reps per side
Coaching Points
- Move feet first to get in front of the ball
- Backhand should redirect ball down, not away
- Stay square to the ball if possible
- Chin stays down through the block
- Quick recovery is as important as the block
- Every blocked ball is a potential out saved
