Infield Drill: Backhand Pick & Stick Fungo (Baseball & Softball)
Catcher blocking drill focusing on backhand technique for balls in the dirt. Learn to redirect the ball down and recover quickly.

How to Run This Drill
- Coach positions about 15 feet in front of the catcher and throws balls into the dirt to the left and right sides.
- Catcher reads the ball off the throw and moves laterally to get in front of it.
- Use backhand technique to redirect the ball down into the dirt - dont try to catch it cleanly.
- Keep chest over the ball with chin tucked. The body creates a wall that keeps the ball in front.
- After blocking, recover the ball quickly and get into throwing position.
- Alternate sides: left, right, left, right. Each catcher gets 10-15 reps per side.
Coaching Points
- Move laterally to get body in front of ball
- Redirect ball down with backhand - dont try to catch
- Chest over ball, chin tucked
- Quick recovery after the block
- Alternate sides for balanced training
- 10-15 reps per side for each catcher
