Reading the Diagram
The four bases form the diamond, with the pitcher in the circle at the center and the catcher behind home plate. Four infielders cover the dirt and three outfielders cover the grass. Each position has a scorekeeping number, so a play can be written 6 to 4 to 3 instead of by name. The layout matches baseball; the field is just smaller.
Softball Field Dimensions

Softball Field Diagram FAQ
What does a softball field diagram show?
A softball field diagram shows the diamond (home plate, first, second, and third base), the pitching circle, the infield and outfield, and where each of the nine defensive players stands, labeled with their number 1 through 9.
What are fastpitch softball field dimensions?
In high school and college fastpitch, the bases are 60 feet apart and the pitching distance is 43 feet. For 12U the pitching distance is usually 40 feet and for 10U it is 35 feet, with 60-foot bases at most youth levels.
Is a softball field the same as a baseball field?
The layout and the nine positions are the same, but a softball field is smaller. The bases are 60 feet apart instead of 90, and the pitcher throws underhand from a flat circle rather than a raised mound.
Is there a printable softball field diagram?
Yes. Use the printable on this page to print the numbered field, or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog for a dugout handout or practice station.
