Infield Drill: Shuffle to Launch Drill (Baseball & Softball)
A three-progression movement drill where the infielder shuffles from a set position into a launch position, building toward a full throw. Trains posture under movement, scapula engagement, and the connection between footwork and throwing mechanics. Can be done at home with just a baseball.

How to Run This Drill
- Start in a set fielding position with the ball held at the center of the chest. Stay in athletic posture - do not stand upright. This is the starting position for all three progressions.
- Progression 1 - Shuffle in posture:
- Shuffle laterally while staying in fielding posture. Ball stays at the center of the chest throughout. Focus on moving fast and with perfect balance without losing your position. Repeat several times.
- Progression 2 - Shuffle to launch and pause:
- Shuffle laterally, then transition into a launch (throwing) position and pause. Hold the pause to feel the scapulas pinch back and engage. You should feel your scaps working as you hold the launch position. Release, reset, and repeat.
- Progression 3 - Shuffle to launch and throw:
- Shuffle laterally, transition into launch position, then deliver the throw to your target. Everything from Progression 2 but now completing the throw. Turn and follow through after the release.
- Repeat all three progressions, focusing on the connection between the shuffle footwork and arriving in a strong, balanced launch position before throwing.
Coaching Points
- Ball stays at the center of the chest during the shuffle - hands that drift wide will be slow to throw.
- Feel the scaps pinch back at launch position in Progression 2. That engagement is what creates a strong throw.
- Do not rush to Progression 3. Master the shuffle and the pause before adding the throw.
- Perfect balance throughout - fast and controlled, not frantic. Speed without balance is wasted movement.
- Can be done at home with just a baseball and a small open space.
