Pitching Drill: Pitcher Fielding Practice (PFP's) (Baseball & Softball)

Essential pitcher fielding practice covering bunts, comebackers, and covering first base. Every pitcher must be a capable fielder.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Pitchers take turns on the mound with first baseman and catcher in position.
  2. Situation 1: Coach rolls or bunts ball to the third base side. Pitcher fields and throws to first.
  3. Situation 2: Bunt to the first base side. Pitcher fields with proper footwork and throws to first.
  4. Situation 3: Ground ball hit right back to the pitcher. Field cleanly and throw to first.
  5. Situation 4: Ground ball to the first baseman. Pitcher must sprint to cover first base with proper footwork.
  6. Give each pitcher 3-5 reps at each situation before rotating. Emphasize proper footwork and communication.

  • Cover all four basic PFP situations
  • Proper footwork on bunts and covering first
  • Communication with first baseman on coverage
  • Field first, then find your target
  • Sprint to cover first - dont jog
  • Essential skill often neglected in practice
