Outfield Drill: Drop Step Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Advanced outfield footwork for balls hit over your head. Drop one foot back, turn your body, and crossover to run to the spot.
How to Run This Drill
- Players line up single file in the outfield with balls.
- First player steps forward, tosses their ball to the coach, and assumes ready position.
- On the coach's "Go!" command, player performs the drop step: drop one foot back, turn the body, and crossover.
- Coach throws the ball high and directly over the player's head.
- Player tracks the ball and catches it with two hands above their head.
- Repeat until footwork becomes automatic, then add variety to ball placement.
Coaching Points
- Get the footwork correct before adding the ball
- Stop the drill immediately if the drop step is wrong
- Drop, turn, and crossover should be one fluid motion
- Keep your eyes on the ball as you turn and run
- Catch with two hands above your head for control
