Team Defense Drill: Cutoff and Relay Circuit (Baseball & Softball)

Station-based relay drill practicing throws from outfield to home through cutoff men. Develops arm strength and proper relay mechanics.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Set up 3 stations simulating different relay situations from the outfield.
  2. Station 1: Left field to shortstop area (third base cutoff) to home plate.
  3. Station 2: Center field to shortstop to home plate - longer relay distance.
  4. Station 3: Right field to second baseman area to home plate.
  5. Outfielder makes a strong throw to the cutoff man, aiming for head/chest height.
  6. Cutoff man catches, turns to the glove side, and makes a quick accurate throw to the catcher.
  7. Rotate through all positions so everyone gets experience at each spot.

Coaching Points

  • Outfielder aims for the cutoff mans head
  • Cutoff man turns glove side - never throwing side
  • Loud calls: Hit the cut! or Cut!
  • Quick feet and release at the cutoff position
  • Get the ball in quickly with accuracy
