Team Defense Drill: Cutoff and Relay Circuit (Baseball & Softball)
Station-based relay drill practicing throws from outfield to home through cutoff men. Develops arm strength and proper relay mechanics.
How to Run This Drill
- Set up 3 stations simulating different relay situations from the outfield.
- Station 1: Left field to shortstop area (third base cutoff) to home plate.
- Station 2: Center field to shortstop to home plate - longer relay distance.
- Station 3: Right field to second baseman area to home plate.
- Outfielder makes a strong throw to the cutoff man, aiming for head/chest height.
- Cutoff man catches, turns to the glove side, and makes a quick accurate throw to the catcher.
- Rotate through all positions so everyone gets experience at each spot.
Coaching Points
- Outfielder aims for the cutoff mans head
- Cutoff man turns glove side - never throwing side
- Loud calls: Hit the cut! or Cut!
- Quick feet and release at the cutoff position
- Get the ball in quickly with accuracy
