Outfield Drill: Concentration Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Three awkward catches, between the legs, behind the back, and over the head, that force an outfielder to watch the ball all the way into the glove. None of them happen in a game, which is the point.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Have a partner stand a short toss away and lob easy fly balls, these are tossed rather than hit
  2. First round: reach the glove between the legs and catch the ball in that window
  3. Second round: catch the ball behind the back
  4. Third round: put the glove straight behind the back, let the ball travel over the head, then lean forward and catch it back there
  5. Once the player has made each one, mix the three at random
  6. A player can work the behind-the-back catch alone by tossing the ball up to themselves

Coaching Points

  • None of these catches happen in a game, the point is forcing the eyes to stay on the ball all the way into the glove
  • Keep the tosses easy, the drill stops working when the player is fighting the flight of the ball
  • It is meant to be fun, so let them mix and match and compete
