Fun Drill: Bobble and Recover Fielding Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Intentionally simulates a fielding error by rolling a dodgeball or softball that is hard to field cleanly. Players must recover with their bare hand (not their glove), pick up the ball, and complete the throw. Teaches the recovery play that saves outs after mistakes.

How to Run This Drill
- Roll a ground ball to the fielder using a dodgeball, softball, or intentionally wobbly bounce
- The fielder attempts to field it but the ball is designed to bounce away or bobble out of the glove
- Once the ball gets away, the fielder recovers by picking it up with the bare hand (NOT the glove)
- The fielder finishes the play with a throw to first base or a target
- Do 10 reps per player, scoring one point for each complete play (recovery + accurate throw)
- Compete to see who can get the most points out of 10
- Coaching variation: use a real baseball but roll it on bumpy grass or dirt to create natural bad hops
- For advanced players: add a baserunner so there is time pressure on the recovery
Coaching Points
- After a bobble, players instinctively try to re-field with the glove, which causes more fumbling. Always recover with the bare hand
- The throw after the recovery is just as important as the pickup. Practice the full sequence, not just the recovery
- Errors happen in every game. The difference between a good player and a great player is how fast they recover and still get the out
- Use this drill after a game where errors cost runs. It reframes errors as fixable rather than catastrophic
- The dodgeball version is hilarious and keeps energy high while teaching a real game skill
