Dugout Edge includes a set of free baseball and softball statistical calculators. Each one is a simple tool: enter your numbers, get an instant result. All calculators are available to everyone with no login required.

Available Calculators

Batting Average (BA)

The most fundamental hitting statistic.

Formula: BA = Hits / At Bats

How to use:

  1. Enter number of hits
  2. Enter number of at bats
  3. Calculator displays batting average instantly

Example:

  • Hits: 25
  • At Bats: 80
  • Batting Average: .313

What it measures: The percentage of at-bats that result in a hit.

Benchmarks by age and level:

  • 8U: .350+ is excellent
  • 10U: .400+ is excellent
  • 12U: .350+ is excellent
  • 14U+: .300+ is excellent

Important: At bats exclude walks, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice bunts, and sacrifice flies.

On-Base Percentage (OBP)

Measures how often a player reaches base safely.

Formula: OBP = (Hits + Walks + HBP) / (At Bats + Walks + HBP + Sacrifice Flies)

How to use:

  1. Enter hits, walks, hit-by-pitch, at bats, and sacrifice flies
  2. Calculator displays OBP

Example:

  • Hits: 25, Walks: 12, HBP: 2, At Bats: 80, Sacrifice Flies: 1
  • OBP: .411

What it measures: Overall ability to reach base through hitting and plate discipline.

Why it matters: Getting on base is the first step to scoring. OBP is often more valuable than batting average because it accounts for walks and hit-by-pitch.

Benchmarks by age:

  • 10U: .450+ is excellent
  • 12U: .400+ is excellent
  • 14U+: .380+ is excellent

Slugging Percentage (SLG)

Measures power and extra-base hitting.

Formula: SLG = Total Bases / At Bats

Total bases:

  • Single = 1 base
  • Double = 2 bases
  • Triple = 3 bases
  • Home run = 4 bases

How to use:

  1. Enter singles, doubles, triples, and home runs
  2. Enter at bats
  3. Calculator computes total bases and displays slugging percentage

Example:

  • Singles: 18, Doubles: 5, Triples: 1, Home Runs: 1
  • At Bats: 80
  • Total Bases: 18 + 10 + 3 + 4 = 35
  • SLG: .438

Interpretation:

  • .400 SLG = Good power
  • .500 SLG = Excellent power
  • .600+ SLG = Elite power

OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging)

The best single metric for evaluating overall offensive performance.

Formula: OPS = OBP + Slugging Percentage

How to use:

  1. Enter all required batting stats (the calculator computes both OBP and SLG for you)
  2. Or enter OBP and SLG directly if you already have them

Example:

  • OBP: .411
  • SLG: .438
  • OPS: .849

Interpretation:

  • .700 OPS = Average
  • .800 OPS = Good
  • .900+ OPS = Excellent
  • 1.000+ OPS = Elite

Why it matters: OPS combines a player's ability to get on base with their power into a single number. It is a better overall measure of offensive value than batting average alone.

ERA (Earned Run Average)

The standard measure of pitching effectiveness.

Formula: ERA = (Earned Runs / Innings Pitched) x 9

For leagues that play 7-inning games, multiply by 7 instead of 9. The calculator lets you select your game length.

How to use:

  1. Enter earned runs allowed
  2. Enter innings pitched (use .1 for one out, .2 for two outs: so 5 and 1/3 innings = 5.1)
  3. Calculator displays ERA

Example:

  • Earned Runs: 8
  • Innings Pitched: 24.2 (24 and 2/3 innings)
  • ERA: 2.92

Important: Only EARNED runs count. Unearned runs (resulting from errors) do not count against the pitcher.

Charts by level:

  • 10U: Under 4.00 is good
  • 12U: Under 3.50 is good
  • 14U: Under 3.00 is good
  • High school: Under 2.50 is excellent

Youth note: Youth ERAs tend to be higher due to frequent defensive errors. Focus on the trend over time rather than the absolute number.

Exit Velocity Calculator

Estimates exit velocity based on bat speed and contact quality.

How to use:

  1. Enter bat speed (mph)
  2. Select contact quality (solid, average, weak)
  3. Calculator estimates exit velocity

What it measures: How fast the ball leaves the bat. Higher exit velocity generally means harder-hit balls and better offensive results.

Pitch Speed Calculator

Converts pitch speed between different mound distances so you can compare velocity across age groups.

How to use:

  1. Enter pitch speed (mph)
  2. Select the original mound distance (46 ft, 54 ft, or 60.5 ft)
  3. Calculator shows equivalent speeds at all three distances

Example: A 50 mph pitch from 46 feet gives the batter the same reaction time as a 66 mph pitch from 60.5 feet. This helps parents and coaches understand what their young player is actually facing relative to what they see on TV.

How the Calculators Work

Each calculator is pure math. You enter numbers and get a result. There is no account required, no login, and no data saved. The calculators are designed for quick use during or after a game, or whenever you need to check a stat.

When to use them:

  • Quick calculation during or after a game
  • Checking a specific stat for a player
  • Verifying a manually calculated number
  • Comparing a player's stats to age-appropriate benchmarks
  • Converting pitch speeds between mound distances

Coming Soon

There are plans to add stat tracking over time and team-level stat aggregation in a future update. This would allow coaches to log stats game by game and see cumulative season totals across the roster.

Best Practices for Stats

Accuracy Matters

Make sure your inputs are correct:

Common mistakes:

  • Confusing hits with at-bats
  • Forgetting to exclude walks from at-bats
  • Miscounting innings pitched (remember: .1 and .2 represent outs, not decimals)
  • Including unearned runs in ERA

Context Matters

Stats do not tell the whole story. Consider the quality of opposition, field conditions, weather, and the umpire's strike zone.

Example: A .250 batting average against top travel teams is very different from .250 in a recreational league.

Do not overreact to one game. A 0-for-4 day does not mean a player is slumping. You need at least 30 at-bats for batting trends and multiple outings for pitching stats to become meaningful.

Use Stats to Inform, Not Dictate

Stats show what happened, but not always why. A player with a low batting average might be hitting the ball hard and getting unlucky. Use the numbers as a starting point, then combine them with what you observe on the field.

Age-Appropriate Stats

8U and Below

Keep it simple. Track hits, at-bats, and runs scored. Avoid tracking strikeouts or errors at this age. The focus should be on effort, improvement, and having fun.

10U-12U

Introduce more statistics: batting average, on-base percentage, and ERA for pitchers. Use stats for positive reinforcement and goal setting. Avoid public stat rankings or shaming.

14U and Up

Full statistical tracking is appropriate: BA, OBP, SLG, OPS for hitters and ERA, WHIP, K/BB for pitchers. At this age, stats become relevant for recruiting, player development planning, and strategic decisions. Help players understand their numbers objectively.

Common Questions

"What's a good batting average for 10U?"

It depends on the league level. In recreational leagues, .350+ is excellent. In competitive travel ball, .300+ is very good. In elite travel, .250+ can be solid because the pitching is tougher. More important than any single number: is the player improving and having fun?

"Why is my ERA so high?"

In youth baseball, walks are common, strike zones are inconsistent, and defensive errors inflate run totals. Focus on WHIP (what the pitcher controls) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (a measure of improving command) rather than ERA alone.

"How do I enter innings pitched with partial innings?"

Each out equals 1/3 of an inning. In the calculator, enter .1 for one out and .2 for two outs. So 4 full innings plus 1 out = 4.1, and 3 full innings plus 2 outs = 3.2.
