Catching Drill: Triple Threat (Baseball & Softball)
Teaches young catchers the triple threat position, where they can receive, block and throw, then trains the difference between catching a ball in the air and turning to block one in the dirt.

How to Run This Drill
- Get into the triple threat position with the glove down near the ground
- Check the elbows are forward and the pocket faces the pitcher
- Partner tosses the ball in the air; catch it and stick it
- Repeat a second catch in the air
- Partner tosses a ball in the dirt; turn and block it
- Mix air balls and dirt balls so the catcher learns which movement each one needs
Coaching Points
- Every play for a catcher starts from this position
- At 8U this can be too advanced; start from a simpler stance if needed
- Most catching problems are bad movements; this drill builds the base for receiving the low pitch versus blocking
