Outfield Drill: Fence Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Teaches outfielders to track fly balls near the fence while using their throwing hand to feel for the wall. Builds field awareness and confidence.
How to Run This Drill
- Each player lines up in the outfield with a ball near the warning track.
- First player tosses their ball to the coach and assumes ready position facing the infield.
- Coach throws a fly ball that will land on or near the warning track.
- Player turns and races back, tracking the ball while reaching back with their bare throwing hand to feel for the fence.
- Player catches the ball with two hands above their head without looking at the fence.
- Rotate through so each player gets multiple reps at different angles.
Coaching Points

- Once on the warning track, start feeling for the fence with your throwing hand
