Warmup Drill: Backhand Toss (Baseball & Softball)

Partner drill developing backhand fielding technique with focus on staying low, proper glove position, and tracking the ball.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Partners 15 feet apart facing each other in defense ready position, fielding a backhand with right foot forward.
  2. Throwing partner rolls or tosses a grounder/shorthop to the backhand side of the receiving partner.
  3. Receiving partner keeps their feet planted with toes pointed slightly out
  4. Receiving partner focuses on fielding the ball backhanded, keeping eyes on the ball, and bending at the knees and hips (keep back mostly flat)
  5. Receiving partner gets into throwing position after the ball is fielded, then rolls a backhanded grounder to their partner
  6. Partners throw backhanded grounders back and forth to each other until each partner has had 5 repetitions

Coaching Points

  • Keep feet planted - don't move them
  • Bend at knees and hips, not at waist
  • Keep glove out front where you can see it
  • Track ball all the way into glove
  • Stay low through the catch
  • Angle glove to funnel ball properly
