Warmup Drill: Backhand Cross Toss (Baseball & Softball)
Advanced backhand drill teaching crossover step technique for balls hit further to glove side, developing range and agility.
How to Run This Drill
- Partners 10 feet apart facing each other in defense ready position like fielding a backhand. Left hand forward.
- Throwing partner rolls or tosses a grounder/shorthop to the backhand side of the receiving partner (towards their throwing hand)
- Receiving partner scissors feet to get in throwing position and simulate throw.
- Partners throw backhanded grounders back and forth to each other until each partner has had 5 repetitions
Coaching Points
- Quick crossover step with glove foot
- Stay low through the crossover
- Don't reach - let the crossover get you there
- Eyes on the ball throughout
- Field the ball out front
- This crossover extends your range significantly
