Infield Drill: First Base Receiving Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Develops proper footwork and timing for first basemen receiving throws. Glove and foot go to the ball together - never stretch early.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Players line up in foul territory near first base. Coach sets up with balls anywhere in the infield.
  2. First player comes to first base and places the heel of their throwing-side foot on the base.
  3. Player stands tall with shoulders square to the thrower, presenting a good target.
  4. Coach throws the ball across the diamond.
  5. As the ball comes, player takes their glove and glove-side foot toward the ball together - they should arrive at the same time.
  6. Rotate through, also working on picks (low throws) and errant throws to both sides.

Coaching Points

  • Glove and foot go toward the ball together
  • Ball should hit glove at the same moment foot lands
  • Never stretch prematurely - you lose adjustment ability
  • Stand tall until you read the throw, then move to it
  • If stretching too early, exaggerate the timing in practice
