Infield Drill: First Base Receiving Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Develops proper footwork and timing for first basemen receiving throws. Glove and foot go to the ball together - never stretch early.
How to Run This Drill
- Players line up in foul territory near first base. Coach sets up with balls anywhere in the infield.
- First player comes to first base and places the heel of their throwing-side foot on the base.
- Player stands tall with shoulders square to the thrower, presenting a good target.
- Coach throws the ball across the diamond.
- As the ball comes, player takes their glove and glove-side foot toward the ball together - they should arrive at the same time.
- Rotate through, also working on picks (low throws) and errant throws to both sides.
Coaching Points
- Glove and foot go toward the ball together
- Ball should hit glove at the same moment foot lands
- Never stretch prematurely - you lose adjustment ability
