Throwing Drill: Cutoff Relay Race (Baseball & Softball)

Relay race where groups compete making throws from the outfield to home. Teaches quick transfers, proper footwork, and turning toward the glove side.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Create groups of 3-5 players standing in a straight line, evenly spaced from the outfield to home.
  2. All groups start at the same time. The first player picks up a ball near the warning track.
  3. First player throws to the second, who turns toward their glove side, catches with two hands, and throws to the next.
  4. Continue the relay until the ball reaches the last player at home plate.
  5. First team to complete the relay wins.
  6. Emphasize turning toward the glove side - not the throwing side - to generate momentum.

Coaching Points

  • Turn toward glove side as the ball approaches - not throwing side
  • Start moving toward the next target as you receive the ball
  • Catch with two hands for a quick transfer
  • Follow your throw after releasing
  • Great competition that teaches fundamentals
