Pitching

Four-Seam Fastball

The straightest and typically fastest fastball variant, gripped across the horseshoe seams with maximum backspin for velocity and carry.

Example Usage

Her four-seam fastball had exceptional ride, getting hitters to swing under it.

Four-Seam Fastball

The four-seam fastball is the classic, straight fastball thrown with maximum velocity. Named for the grip (fingers across four seams), it produces the most backspin and the least horizontal movement of any fastball.

The Four-Seam Grip

Finger Placement

  • Index and middle fingers across the wide seams (horseshoe)
  • Fingers slightly apart (about finger-width)
  • Thumb underneath, on the leather
  • Fingertips grip the seams

Pressure Points

  • Even pressure on both fingers
  • Fingertip grip, not deep in hand
  • Wrist stays behind the ball

Characteristics

Velocity

  • Typically a pitcher's fastest pitch
  • Maximum arm speed and effort
  • Optimized for pure speed

Movement

  • Least horizontal movement
  • Strong backspin creates "rise" or carry
  • Appears to stay up in the zone

Location

  • Effective up in the zone
  • "Elevated four-seam" generates swings and misses
  • "Riding" action through the hitting zone

Four-Seam vs. Two-Seam

Four-Seam Two-Seam
Straight Arm-side run
Maximum velocity 1-3 mph slower
More backspin Less backspin
Elevated location Lower in zone
Swings and misses Ground balls

When to Throw It

  • Ahead in the count: Blow it by the hitter
