Reading the Diagram
The four bases form the diamond: home plate, first base to the right, second base up the middle, and third base to the left. The pitcher stands on the mound in the center, with the catcher behind home. The four infielders cover the dirt, and the three outfielders cover the grass behind them. Every position has a number used for scorekeeping, so a play can be written as 6 to 4 to 3 instead of by name.

Field Diagram FAQ
What does a baseball field diagram show?
A baseball field diagram shows the diamond (home plate, first, second, and third base), the pitcher’s mound, the infield and outfield, and where each of the nine defensive players stands. The positions are usually labeled with their number, 1 through 9.
What are the dimensions of a baseball field?
In MLB and high school, the bases are 90 feet apart and the pitcher’s mound is 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. Little League (Majors) uses 60-foot bases and a 46-foot pitching distance. The intermediate 50/70 division uses 70-foot bases and a 50-foot mound.
How far is home plate to second base?
On a 90-foot field, home plate to second base is about 127 feet 3 inches, measured straight across the diamond. On a 60-foot Little League field it is about 84 feet 10 inches.
Is there a printable baseball field diagram?
