Throwing Drill: Cutoff Relay Race (Baseball & Softball)
Relay race where groups compete making throws from the outfield to home. Teaches quick transfers, proper footwork, and turning toward the glove side.
How to Run This Drill
- Create groups of 3-5 players standing in a straight line, evenly spaced from the outfield to home.
- All groups start at the same time. The first player picks up a ball near the warning track.
- First player throws to the second, who turns toward their glove side, catches with two hands, and throws to the next.
- Continue the relay until the ball reaches the last player at home plate.
- First team to complete the relay wins.
- Emphasize turning toward the glove side - not the throwing side - to generate momentum.
Coaching Points
- Turn toward glove side as the ball approaches - not throwing side
- Start moving toward the next target as you receive the ball
- Catch with two hands for a quick transfer
- Follow your throw after releasing
- Great competition that teaches fundamentals

12-Step Cone Drill
A 5-cone drill covering all 12 outfield movements a player will face in a game. Uses 4 cones in a square (15 strides apart) plus a center cone to practice fly balls, ground balls, line drives, shoestring catches, over-the-head balls, and the speed turn.
Chicken Drill
A confidence-building fly ball drill for young players who are afraid of the ball. Players wear batting helmets and catch a tossed tennis ball with their head instead of their glove, teaching them to track the ball and get under it without any fear.
