Frequently Asked Questions

How is a softball scorecard different from a baseball scorecard?
The diamond grid is identical — the differences are in pitcher stats (no balks, but illegal pitches are a thing), roster rules (DP/FLEX is standard in fastpitch), and the passed ball column is more prominent because passed balls are more common in youth softball. Use the softball-specific template for ASA, USA Softball, or USSSA league play.
What is DP/FLEX and does the scorecard need a column for it?
DP (Designated Player) and FLEX (defensive specialist who does not bat) are standard in most fastpitch leagues. Our softball scorecard includes dedicated rows for DP and FLEX substitutions so you can track them clearly and stay legal with the umpire.
How many innings does softball play?
Most leagues play 7 innings. Youth leagues often use 5 or 6. Our 7-inning template handles regulation games with extra-inning boxes if needed. For short-form games, the extra space is fine — just don't fill in what did not happen.
Does this softball scorecard work for both fastpitch and slowpitch?
Yes. The notation is the same for both. Slowpitch often uses 10 players (with a "short fielder") — our template has a 10th batting row specifically for this case. Fastpitch uses 9 + optional DP.
Do I need a different scorecard for tee ball and coach pitch softball?
Early youth softball (ages 5-8) usually skips the pitching log entirely. Use a stat tracker or skills sheet instead of a full scorecard. Starting around age 9-10 when real pitching begins, the standard softball scorecard works.
How do I score an illegal pitch in softball?
Mark "IP" in the pitcher log column. The batter either takes the base (if intentional ball) or the coach can decline the penalty. In rec ball, illegal pitches often happen in bunches — keep a running count to flag mechanics issues to the pitching coach.
