Infield Drill: Infield L Drill (Baseball & Softball)
A no-equipment footwork drill that traces an L-shape pattern to develop fast hip rotation and quick feet. Can be done at home in a driveway or backyard with no equipment.
How to Run This Drill
- Find a small open space - a driveway, backyard, or living room works fine. No equipment needed, no glove required.
- Set up in an athletic fielding stance. Visualize an L-shape on the ground in front of you - one line going forward, one turning at a corner.
- Replace your feet in the shape of the L, tracing the corner with quick footwork. The goal is to get around the corner of the L as fast as possible.
- Key mechanic: fire the hips and turn them fast as you hit the corner of the L. The hips should rotate quickly to change direction.
- Keep your feet skimming the ground throughout. Do NOT jump or lift your feet high. Feet that leave the ground create dead time and slow you down.
- There should be no space between your feet and the ground. The closer your feet stay to the surface, the faster you move.
- Go back and forth along the L pattern repeatedly, focusing on quickness at the corner turn each time.
- Progress by increasing the speed of each rep while maintaining control and keeping feet low to the ground.
Coaching Points
- No jumping - skim the ground. Feet that come up high are slow feet.
- Hips must fire and turn fast at the corner. The hip rotation is what creates speed through the change of direction.
- If feet are getting far from the ground, you are losing speed. Stay low and quick.
- Can be done anywhere with no equipment - great for at-home training between practices.
