Outfield Drill: Outfield Communication Drill (Baseball & Softball)
Two outfielders compete for fly balls thrown between them. Must call for the ball at least three times before catching - teaches communication that prevents collisions.
How to Run This Drill
- Outfielders form two lines about 20 feet apart in the outfield.
- First player from each line steps forward to compete for the fly ball.
- Coach throws a fly ball between the two fielders.
- Players must call "I got it!" at least three times as they pursue the ball.
- The player who calls for it takes priority - the other backs up.
- After the catch, throw the ball to a cutoff man, then rotate to the back of the lines.
Coaching Points
- If both call for the ball, the one who keeps calling takes it
- For older players, center fielder has priority on any ball they call
- Add a third player to simulate more realistic game situations
- Never give up calling if there is any uncertainty
- Use soft balls or tennis balls for younger players
