Outfield Drill: Outfield Communication Drill (Baseball & Softball)

Two outfielders compete for fly balls thrown between them. Must call for the ball at least three times before catching - teaches communication that prevents collisions.

How to Run This Drill

  1. Outfielders form two lines about 20 feet apart in the outfield.
  2. First player from each line steps forward to compete for the fly ball.
  3. Coach throws a fly ball between the two fielders.
  4. Players must call "I got it!" at least three times as they pursue the ball.
  5. The player who calls for it takes priority - the other backs up.
  6. After the catch, throw the ball to a cutoff man, then rotate to the back of the lines.

Coaching Points

  • If both call for the ball, the one who keeps calling takes it
  • For older players, center fielder has priority on any ball they call
  • Add a third player to simulate more realistic game situations
  • Never give up calling if there is any uncertainty
  • Use soft balls or tennis balls for younger players
