Fielding Drill: 8 Ball Softball Outfield Drill (Softball)
The 8-Ball drill helps outfielders practice making plays while moving in different directions. Players get eight opportunities to field balls hit around them in various locations.
Instructions
Set up a box area in the outfield using cones or markers. The size of the box can be adjusted based on player skill level. A coach stands in one location and hits or throws balls to eight different spots around the player. The player must move quickly to each ball, field it cleanly, and return it to the coach. Players should focus on getting to the ball quickly, using proper footwork, and making clean plays. After completing all eight balls, rotate to the next player.
Coaching Points
- Emphasize taking care of the ball and making clean catches
- Encourage players to move their feet and get their body in front of the ball
- Make the drill competitive by timing players or counting successful plays
- Adjust the box size to match player ability - smaller for advanced, larger for beginners
