Throwing Drill: Throwing Drill For Those Who Shot Put The Ball Or Lose Power (Softball)

Corrective throwing drill specifically designed to fix shot-putting motion and restore proper arm extension and power generation.

Instructions

Identify the problem: Shot-putting occurs when player pushes ball rather than throwing with proper arm whip. The fix: Focus on ball getting behind head with elbow up before forward motion. Drill sequence: Start with one-knee position to isolate upper body. Partner holds glove high, forcing throw upward with extension. Emphasize reaching back before coming forward. Progress to standing position maintaining same arm path. Use fence drill: Stand sideways to fence, throw over fence forcing proper extension. Partner provides feedback on arm position throughout throw. Add resistance band work to strengthen external rotation. Record video before and after to show improvement. Practice daily until new pattern becomes automatic.

Coaching Points

  • Shot-putting is common in softball due to underhand pitch exposure
  • The key is getting ball behind head with high elbow position
  • Muscle memory takes time to change - be patient
  • Constant feedback and visual cues accelerate correction
  • Strength in proper positions prevents regression
  • Video is powerful tool for player buy-in and progress tracking
