Fielding Drill: Knockout Fielding (Baseball & Softball)
Competitive elimination fielding drill where players must successfully field and throw to targets to stay in the game. Each round increases in difficulty, testing players' fielding skills under pressure.
Instructions
Set up fielding stations with clear throwing targets (bases, cones, or designated players). Ensure a coach or parent is available to hit or throw balls consistently to each fielder. Gather all players and explain the progression of challenges for each round. Round 1: Field a ground ball cleanly - Players must field the ball without bobbles or errors. Round 2: Field and make an accurate throw to first base - Ball must be caught by target player. Round 3: Field a ground ball and make a strong, accurate throw - Emphasize velocity and accuracy. Round 4: Field and make a double play turn (or more advanced fielding play depending on age). Players who fail their task are "knocked out" and move to the side. Eliminated players can help hit/throw balls or provide encouragement. Continue with progressively harder challenges as needed. Last player remaining wins. Restart with all players and modify challenges based on positions or skill levels.
Coaching Points
- Adjust difficulty based on age and skill level of players
- Hit or throw balls at consistent speed to keep drill fair
- Keep the drill moving - limit to 1-2 chances per player per round
- Focus on fundamentals: ready position, footwork, clean fielding, accurate throws
- Encourage proper technique even under competitive pressure
- Celebrate good plays and effort, not just the winner
- For younger ages, make rounds easier (example: Round 1 - Catch a rolled ball, Round 2 - Field a slow grounder)
- Can add "lives" system for younger players to keep them engaged longer
- Position-specific variations can be used (infielders vs outfielders)
